Just days after the Tokyo Olympics, Polish javelin thrower Maria Magdalena Andrejczyk auctioned her silver medal to fund heart surgery for 8-month-old Miloszek Malysa.
Zabka, a Polish convenience store chain, won the auction with a bid of $125,000.
However, the company decided to let Andrejczyk keep the medal, stating in a Facebook post, “We were moved by the beautiful and extremely noble gesture of our Olympian,” the company said in a Facebook post translated from Polish. “We also decided that the silver medal from Tokyo will remain with Ms. Maria, who showed how great she is.”
